Pedestrian Crossing and lighting needed at Clarion Road/Engineering Dept junction at IT Sligo as a safety measure for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users – Maguire

Cllr. Sinead Maguire has today (Monday 14th) asked Sligo County Council to carry out a feasibility study to assess the need for a pedestrian crossing on the Clarion Road at the junction of the Engineering Department of Sligo institute of Technology. She is further calling on the Council to review the public lighting in this area particularly at the entrance to the Clarion Village Gateway apartments and towards St. Edwards National School.

Cllr. Maguire said, “The population of IT Sligo is growing and with it comes high volumes of pedestrian and vehicle traffic in its environs. The Clarion road is a very busy road, and a large population of students use the exit/entrance from the rear of the Engineering block to access their accommodation in the apartments at Grove/Clarion Village. This road is also the main bus route for the Strandhill/Rosses Point buses.

She added, “The Council needs to examine the feasibility of putting a pedestrian crossing at the exit/entrance to the Engineering block. Both the student population and general public use this entrance to access the IT campus and to get to the Knocknarea Arena if the overflow carpark adjacent to the hotel is required.

“It has become apparent over the past winter months, that a review of this part of the road is required. The lighting in the area, particularly at the entrance from the apartments towards St Edwards National School, also needs to be examined and if improvements are needed the Council will need to act to ensure safety for all pedestrians.”

Cllr Maguire concluded, “The safety of all road users – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers is paramount. Undertaking this review will ensure that we can plan for the future to provide a safe environment for all those in this area.”
