Maguire calls on Sligo County Council to prepare handbook for new councillors to help them deliver for their constituents

Cllr. Sinead Maguire has today (Monday 14th) brought a motion (Motion 21) to Sligo County Council calling on the Council to prepare a handbook for all newly-elected Councillors. The aim of this would be to ensure that constituents are best served by new representatives in getting access to the resources available to them.

Cllr. Maguire said, “With the local elections on the horizon in May this year, the Council has an opportunity to prepare well in advance for this and be ready to meet the needs of new councillors. This initiative would ensure that all Councillors are aware of their roles and responsibilities on getting elected. It would also give new representatives the best chance of understanding how the council operates in practical ways so that they can deliver for their constituents.”

Cllr Maguire added, “On entering any new workplace, it is common practice to have a Handbook outlining the rules and responsibilities of your new role. It makes sense that the Council would adopt a similar stance for all new councillors. The advantage of this proposal is that the ultimate benefactor will be the constituents whose representatives will be able to hit the ground running for them on commencement of their new role.”
