Sligo/Leitrim Sheep Farmers to benefit from new market to Japan

Following successful talks between Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed and his Japanese counterpart, Cllr Sinéad Maguire has welcomed the announcement that Irish sheepmeat now has access to the Japanese market.

Cllr Maguire added, “Sligo and Leitrim have a Sheep population of 242,000 according to the 2017 Sheep and Goats census. The opening of markets such as this to Japan will be warmly received by sheep farmers here in Sligo and Leitrim.”

“Sheep farming is a very important part of Irish agriculture and is the fourth most important animal enterprise in Ireland, operating on both hill and lowland farms. In communities of Sligo and Leitrim the contribution of these farmers to their community cannot be underestimated and I welcome all announcements which should aid the enhancement of markets for these farmers.”
